INTRODUCTION

RK Narayan Next to Mulk Raj Anand is the most potent voice of Indian writers in English. He is a story-teller. He wrote many a good novel. But he is a master artist of short stories. No doubt, he shows often Maupassant, sometimes Chekov or Faulkner in his short stories. Still, he has no showmanship. Life is a passing phase for him. He welcomes both rain and sun with equal gaiety.

He gathers his Characters from every walk of his society. They are small fry. They are common but not commonplace. He places them is his ‘Malgudi Days’. Malgudi is a town not anywhere on the map of the world. The rich gallery of characters is in Malagudi. They are in the land of somewhere. But Narayan makes the people of the land of everywhere. This is his magic. He has no concrete philosophy of life. He never interferes with his characters and their doings and dealings. He stands apart from them. He plays the role of an onlooker. The present story ‘An Astrologer’s Day’ is the first gem of his Malgudi mine. It deals with a fake astrologer.

সমাজের যাবতীয় ক্ষেত্র থেকে তিনি সংগ্রহ করেছেন গল্পের চরিত্র। তারা সবাই খুবই সাধারণ। তবে তারা সাধারণ হলেও তুচ্ছ নয়। তাদের সবাইকে তিনি তাঁর ‘মালগুডি ডেইজ’-এ স্থান দিয়েছেন।পৃথিবীর মানচিত্রে মালগুডি শহর নেই কোথাও। মালগুডিতে আছে বর্ণময় চরিত্রের সমৃদ্ধ গ্যালারি। তারা কোনো এক দেশের বাসিন্দা। কিন্তু নারায়ণ তাদের সব দেশের বাসিন্দা হিসেবে দেখিয়েছেন। এটাই হল তার ইন্দ্রজাল। তার নিজস্ব কোনো দর্শন নেই । তিনি কখনো তাঁর সৃষ্ট চরিত্রগুলির উপর মাতব্বরি বা তাদের চলাফেরা ও কাজকর্মে হস্তক্ষেপ করেননি। তিনি তাদের থেকে তফাতে থাকতেন। তিনি পালন করতেন দর্শকের ভূমিকা। আলোচ্য ‘An Astrologer’s Day’ গল্পটি তাঁর মালগুডি খনির প্রথম মণি। এ এক নকল জ্যোতিষীর কাহিনি।

SUMMARY

A fake astrologer used to sit under a tamarind tree branch beside a road inside a park. He sat along with other different sellers. He created a queer appearance by painting his forehead with holy ash and Vermilion and wearing a saffron-coloured turban. This unusual attire attracted a lot of customers. At first, He let his clients speak for at least 10 minutes.

Then only he would make comments and advices about them, Which worked for him. One evening when he was about to leave the place, He found a man who was standing before the counter. He asked the man to sit before him. The stranger challenged him for his knowledge about Astrology. He told the astrologer to tell only that he was asked. At this he felt insulted. He told he charged three paise for each question. The man threw an anna and said if he was wrong he would take his money back with interest. The astrologer at first, Asked for ₹5 and then 8 annas if his predictions were correct.

Thus, They continued to bargain for some time till they reached an agreement. The man lighted a cigar when the astrologer recognised him. He knew the man. He was from the same village and whom he had thought he killed. He then started saying everything so accurately that the man was astonished. He told him that the man he was looking for died four months ago, run over by a lorry. It was actually the astrologer himself. He wanted to save his own life from the man.

He further told the man when he was convinced that he should stay at home and never come to that town; else he would be again in great danger. After this the astrologer went home at almost midnight. He expressed to his wife that he was now relieved from the fact that he did not carry the burden of a murder.

সারসংক্ষেপ

একজন নকল জ্যোতিষী একটি পার্কের মধ্যে রাস্তার ধারে এক তেঁতুলগাছের শাখার নীচে বসত। আরও বিভিন্ন রকমের বিক্রেতাদের সঙ্গে সে বসত। তার কপালে পবিত্র ছাই আর সিঁদুর লেপে আর মাথায় গেরুয়া পাগড়ি পরে সে তার একটি অদ্ভুত চেহারা তৈরি করেছিল। তার এই অদ্ভুত পোশাক এবং চেহারা অনেক মক্কেলকে তার দিকে আকৃষ্ট করত। সে আগে তার মক্কেলদের দশ মিনিট কথা বলতে দিত।

এইভাবে যতক্ষণ না তারা একটি সম্মতিতে পৌঁছোয়, ততক্ষণ তারা দর কষাকষি করে যেতে লাগল। লোকটি একটি চুরুট জ্বালালে জ্যোতিষী তাকে চিনতে পারল। জ্যোতিষী লোকটিকে চিনত। সে ছিল একই গ্রামের লোক এবং যাকে সে হত্যা করেছে ভেবেছিল। সে তারপর সবকিছু এত নিখুঁতভাবে বলতে লাগল যে লোকটি অবাক হয়ে গেল। সে তাকে বলল যে-লোকটিকে সে খুঁজছে সে চারমাস আগে লরি চাপা পড়ে মারা গেছে। এটি ছিল আসলে জ্যোতিষী নিজে। সে চেয়েছিল ওই লোকটির হাত থেকে নিজের জীবন বাঁচাতে।

সে তাকে আরও বলল, যখন তার বিশ্বাস জন্মাল যে সে যেন ঘর ছেড়ে না-বেরোয় এবং এই শহরে কোনো দিনও না-আসে; নাহলে তার জীবনে আবার ঘোর বিপদ আসবে। এরপর প্রায় মাঝরাতে জ্যোতিষী বাড়ি ফিরল। সে তার স্ত্রীকে জানাল যে, সে এখন এটি ভেবে স্বস্তিলাভ করে যে, তাকে মানুষ খুনের মতো অপরাধের বোঝা বহন করতে হয়নি।

Punctually at midday he opened his bag and spread out his professional equipment, which consisted of a dozen cowrie shells, a square piece of cloth with obscure mystic charts on it, a notebook and a bundle of palmyra writing.

Next to him in vociferousness came a vendor of fried groundnuts, who gave his ware a fancy name each day, calling it Bombay Ice-Cream one day, and on the next Delhi Almond, and on the third Raja’s Delicacy, and so on and so forth, and people flocked to him.

The astrologer transacted his business by the light of a flare which crackled and smoked up above the groundnut heap nearby.

The other grumbled some vague reply.

The astrologer pressed his invitation; whereupon the other thrust his palm under his rose, saying: “You call yourself an astrologer?” The astrologer felt challenged and said, tilting the other’s palm towards the green shaft of light: “Yours is a nature …” “Oh, stop that,” the other said. “Tell me something worthwhile….”Our friend felt piqued.

“If you find my answers satisfactory, will you give me five rupees?” “No.”

“আর তারপর এক পাশের মাঠের মাঝে একটি কুয়োর মধ্যে আপনাকে ঠেলে ফেলে দেওয়া হয়েছিল। আপনাকে মরার জন্য ছেড়ে দেওয়া হয়েছিল।

জ্যোতিষী যতক্ষণে তার জিনিসপত্র তুলে ব্যাগে ভরল ততক্ষণে জায়গাটি শুনসান হয়ে গেছে।

The green shaft was also gone, leaving the place in darkness and silence.

জায়গাটিকে অন্ধকার ও নিস্তব্ধ করে দিয়ে সেই সবুজ আলোর রশ্মিটিও চলে গিয়েছে।

The stranger had gone off into the night, after giving the astrologer a handful of coins.
